How do we source our cacao?
We have been doing research and working with farmers directly for the past 10 years. We train them in GAP and harvest and post harvest. We make sure the beans we use are sustainably grown. Therefore our supply chain is really short and we work directly with farmers in Peru. This is how we ensure quality and positive impact from the farm to your table. - Information about the region was sourced from:
[Harvest] The mountainous and diverse terrain gives this cacao its unique and robust flavor profile.
[Location] Grown between the Andes and the Amazonian plains, with altitudes ranging from 500 to 3,500 meters.
[Climate] Features both warm-temperate and hot semi-arid zones, with wide temperature and rainfall variations.
[Flavor] This cacao is complex, with fruity and nutty flavors combined with long-lasting floral aromas, creating a multi-layered taste experience.

this specific strain of CACÁO was initially quite perplexing • we were excited at first to get THE FULL IMPRINT of this Wild Genetic Strain • Spices come through with distinctive Notes & Accents the f Cinnamon and Chiles • Very Nutty strain & Variants from Each piece to the Next are Surely Notable! we really want to Love it...after Living in Ecuador, Costa Rica & Borikén(Puerto Rico), this strain imbues the body in ways genetic hybrids crossed with an heirloom strain from the wild in functional means internally • its Follow Through is not as pronounced as other Wild strain of the Chocolate Density & Aromas • yet, has a bit* of floral notes in the perfume it gives off • we want to Love it- yet this is not a "classic" strain in real assessment of it • more culinary than a strain 2 engage in with a RAW CACÁO CEREMONY surely •do suggest trying it, however Bolivia & Ecuador are STILL TOP QUALITY along with Brasil + SOUTH TIP OF VENEZUELA • not too disappointed but we got to keep it 1,000 Real for the Everyday People
Hi Roberto,
Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience and for offering such a thoughtful perspective. We also appreciate the email conversation we had with you, and we are glad we were able to go deeper into the genetics and history of cacao there.
To clarify for anyone reading:
Wild cacao is not defined by political borders or by modern expectations of what “wild” should look like. The Amazon Basin spans Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Venezuela and Bolivia, and cacao genetics follow the rainforest ecosystem, not country lines.
The cacao we offer comes from native, wild populations in the High Amazon Basin of Peru, particularly from Awajún territory. These communities are located in some of the most remote, biodiverse areas of the Amazon. Wild cacao from these regions shows a wide range of shapes, sizes and phenotypes because of open pollination and genetic diversity, so smooth or larger beans do not indicate hybridization or domestication.
There is also extensive scientific and archaeological evidence showing Peru’s importance in cacao’s origin story, including:
• Huaca Montegrande, the oldest known site of cacao consumption, predating Mesoamerica
• The rediscovery of the Fortunato variety in Peru after it was believed extinct in Ecuador
• Widely accepted genetic research such as the 2008 PNAS study by Motamayor et al.
At Cacao Adventures we work exclusively with wild, non-alkalized, minimally processed cacao, and José’s 12 years living and working in the Peruvian Amazon with local families and the UN International Trade Centre is the foundation of our sourcing. We continue to visit our partner families every year to support training, fermentation, post-harvest practices, and to preserve these original strains.
We fully respect that each origin gives a different expression and that every palate connects differently with each strain. Your feedback is valuable, and we are glad you recommend others try it too.
Thank you again for sharing your thoughts and for the conversation. We are always open to discussing cacao genetics and origins with anyone who wants to learn more.
Warmly,
The Cacao Adventures Team

How does Cacao Adventures Cacao differ from Cacao Powder?
Ceremonial grade cacao and cacao powder vary in quality, use, and flavor. Ceremonial grade cacao is meticulously sourced for its exceptional purity and richness, often reserved for ceremonial rituals or premium cacao drinks due to its nuanced flavor profile and potential health benefits. In contrast, cacao powder is a more processed form, commonly used in cooking, baking, or making hot chocolate, offering a rich chocolate taste but without the same complexity as ceremonial grade cacao.
Why is it a good alternative to coffee?
Ceremonial grade cacao presents a compelling alternative to coffee due to its smoother energy boost from theobromine, which avoids the jitters and crashes often associated with caffeine. Rich in antioxidants and nutrients, ceremonial cacao offers potential health benefits including improved mood and focus, alongside supporting cardiovascular health. Its unique flavor profile and ritualistic qualities provide a sensory experience that fosters relaxation, connection, and mindfulness, making it a nourishing choice for both body and spirit.
What is inside your cacao?

Is it safe for kids?
Ceremonial grade cacao is generally safe for kids to consume in moderation, especially when incorporated into traditional recipes or beverages. However, it's essential to consider individual sensitivities and any potential allergic reactions. Some children may be more sensitive to caffeine or theobromine found in cacao, so monitoring their intake and observing any adverse reactions is important. As with any food or beverage, it's best to consult with a healthcare professional if you have specific concerns about your child's consumption of ceremonial grade cacao.
It is hot chocolate?
