What is Ceremonial Cacao?
Ceremonial cacao is high-quality cacao made from wild strains, minimally processed made from whole cacao beans harvested in micro-lots, crafted respecting the plant and its flavors. It keeps the natural cacao butter and the complex flavors of the bean, so each cup feels more like a warm, grounding ritual than a quick treat.
Compared to coffee, ceremonial cacao offers a steadier, more spacious kind of energy. It’s rich in theobromine (a gentler relative of caffeine), which tends to support focus and a sense of uplift without the sharp spikes, jitters, or hard crash many people feel with coffee. Many people use it for creative work, reflection, or morning rituals where they want to feel awake but still connected to their body.
Compared to regular chocolate, ceremonial cacao is far less processed no refined sugar, dairy, or additives - those are things you can choose to add (or skip) when you prepare your cup. You’re drinking a higher percentage of real cacao, with its naturally light bitter, complex flavor, rather than a bar that’s been blended to taste mostly of sugar and milk. That’s part of why a single cup can feel more substantial and intentional than a handful of chocolate pieces or chocolate candy.
Why origin and wild‑grown Peruvian cacao matter
Our ceremonial cacao comes from wild‑grown cacao in the Peruvian Amazon, where trees grow in biodiverse forest ecosystems rather than in large, single‑crop plantations (obviously regenerative farms!). This means each harvest reflects a living landscape – the soil, climate, and surrounding plants – not just a factory process. Working with wild and semi‑wild cacao also supports the continuation of older, more diverse cacao genetics instead of narrowing everything down to a few high‑yield varieties. This is also why finding wild-grown cacao is more difficult.
We partner directly with smallholder growers and communities, building relationships that are based on fair pay, long‑term collaboration, and respect for local knowledge and share our own knowledge. Many of these families have been tending cacao and other forest crops for generations. By choosing cacao from these relationships, you’re supporting people who are actively caring for their land and passing down practices that keep the forest alive.
For us, stewardship means making choices that are good for both people and place. That includes transparent sourcing, careful quality and safety testing, and a commitment to buying cacao in ways that encourage conservation rather than deforestation. When you drink this cacao, you’re not just tasting a rich, complex cup – you’re participating in a wider web of relationships that honors the origins and caretakers of this plant.
Safety & considerations
Ceremonial cacao is still a stimulating plant, so it isn’t right for everyone. If you’re pregnant, have a heart condition, very high blood pressure, or take antidepressants or other MAOI‑type medications, it’s important to talk with your healthcare provider and start with a smaller amount, or choose to skip it altogether. Always listen to your body, start gently, and adjust your amount over time rather than pushing for a strong "dose" right away.

Questions new cacao drinkers often ask.
Ceremonial cacao is made from minimally processed whole cacao beans and keeps the natural cacao butter, so it’s richer, more grounding, and closer to the plant itself. Most hot chocolate is more processed and mostly sugar, milk, and cocoa powder.
For a first cup, a small, gentle amount is best — usually around 15–20 g of cacao, depending on your body and sensitivity. You can always adjust over time as you get to know how it feels.
Many people enjoy cacao in the morning or early afternoon so they have time to feel its gentle uplift and focus. If you’re sensitive to stimulants, it’s usually better to avoid drinking it too late in the evening.
Some people like to drink cacao daily, while others prefer a few times a week for special moments or rituals. Start slowly, listen to your body, and give yourself rest days if you ever feel overstimulated.
Yes. You can enjoy cacao plain or with a little sweetener and your favorite milk or plant mylk. Keeping it on the simple, less-sweet side helps you really taste the cacao and notice how it feels in your body.
Many coffee-sensitive people find cacao gentler, because it’s rich in theobromine rather than just caffeine. Even so, everyone is different, so start with a smaller amount, notice how you feel, and adjust slowly.
Cacao is still a stimulating plant, so it may not be right for everyone. If you’re pregnant, have a heart condition or very high blood pressure, or take antidepressants or other MAOI‑type medications, it’s important to talk with your healthcare provider first and start gently or choose to skip it altogether.
