Heavy Metals in Cacao: What You Should Know

At Cacao Adventures, ceremonial cacao is part of your daily ritual — and it must meet the highest standards of purity and safety. We drink it every day, our toddler drinks it very often, so safety will always be a priority.
Because cacao is grown in soil, transparency matters.
Every production lot of our ceremonial cacao is tested by an independent third-party laboratory for:
-
Lead (Pb)
-
Cadmium (Cd)
-
Salmonella
We test lot by lot, every lot — not occasionally — so our results reflect current production.
Why Heavy Metals Testing Matters in Cacao
Cacao naturally absorbs minerals from the soil. In some regions, this can include trace amounts of cadmium. Lead exposure can occur during post-harvest handling if proper practices are not followed.
That’s why we focus on:
-
Direct trade sourcing in Peru
-
Clean fermentation and drying practices
-
Controlled handling from harvest to packaging
-
Third-party testing for every batch
We evaluate results against conservative benchmarks, including FDA guidance and California Proposition 65 standards.
When a report shows “Not Detected,” it means levels are below the laboratory’s measurable detection limit.
Salmonella Testing
Every lot is also tested for Salmonella to ensure microbial safety.
Ceremonial cacao should support your well-being — never compromise it.

Beyond Safety: Quality & Direct Trade Commitment

Our mission goes beyond testing.
When you purchase from Cacao Adventures, you are not only choosing ceremonial cacao that is third-party tested for lead, cadmium, and Salmonella — you are choosing cacao sourced at the highest quality standards.
We work directly with our farming partners in Peru and pay a premium above New York commodity reference prices. There are no middlemen.
This allows us to:
-
Preserve native cacao genetics
-
Support indigenous and small farming families directly
-
Maintain strict post-harvest standards
-
Prioritize quality over volume
Your ritual supports real families, real land, and real preservation.
Experience the Difference
Choose ceremonial cacao that is tested, traceable, and directly sourced.
How to use?
- 1. Add 3 cacao coins (or 21 g chopped cacao) to a cup and cover with a bit of boiling water.
- 2. Wait 1 minute, stir. This is your cacao base.
- 3. Add ginger, cardamom, cinnamon, white pepper, and honey (optional). Mix.
- 4. Add 7 oz of water or milk (hot or cold), then stir or blend.
- 5. Enjoy — play with the spices and make it your own.

Love these! Will be buying more from this brand
Very good quality bean will purchase these again.
Very nice coins, taste is great with a little ginger, cardamom, white pepper, honey and frothed cream!
Just tried the High Amazon paste (was using a powder previously) and the difference is night and day. So much flavor and body, more like a fine coffee. Immediately ordered a larger bag! Love that they test for heavy metals. Will try their other variety next. What a treat from a business with excellent practices.
I am very much enjoying this cacao in my coffee. It gives me a nice energy boost and is quite tasty.
Just started adding this ceremonial cacao to my daily routine. I'm loving it. Sometimes I have 3 discs with hot water and milk, adding cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, and pepper. Delicious. Other days, I drop a discount or 2 into my coffee. I'm hooked.
All the types of cacao I've tried from cacao adventures have been excellent, but tropical desert is my favorite.
It's the best cacao I've ever tried. It's very fruity and unique; you can definitely taste the tangerine and brown sugar notes.
I love that cacao adventures uses original strains of chocolate originating from specific regions, and that they test for heavy metals.
Cacao adventures has been the best ceremonial cacao I've tried! I tried Keith's, Cacao, which is one of the biggest names in ceremonial cacao, but it was honestly bland compared to cacao adventures.
Highly recommend this company 👍
I have recently bought a few items from cacao adventures and I can say it truly the best.
Not only the quality of the products, but the customer service too.
I received a personal note, even thou I was not concerned with the delivery, that’s truly caring about your customers and I really appreciated. Thank you!
As a chocolate lover I wasn't sure where to start, so I ordered this sample pack and was very pleased. The shipping was lightning quick, the packaging was gorgeous, and thank you for the explanations and the recipe. It was so helpful! There's something for everyone here. I like the unmilked chocolate because it was still very pure and healthy compared to all the sugary milk chocolate out there. The next level was probably my favorite, but the unsweetened ceremonial cacao was still delicious and I actually mixed some of each at times and other times I did just pure samples, blending them in hot macadamia nut milk with a little bit of nutmeg. Really yummy way to get healthy chocolate benefits!
Cannot tell yet if the wafers are helping. I am enjoying them daily and hoping Cocoa Adventures will provide some of the benefits advertised.
