The origin

From the High Amazon Basin, Amazonas, Peru

Group of Awajun people smiling with Jose, founder of Cacao Adventures
Jose's visit to one of the Awajún communities - March 2026

Sourced along the Marañón River in Peru's Amazonas region, this cacao grows in lush rainforest where wild trees thrive year-round under the canopy. Consistent rain, rich jungle soils, and shade-grown cultivation produce beans with a deep, layered flavor that can only come from this specific corner of the Amazon.

Harvested and tended by Awajún families who steward these forests — with no road access, everything moves by river — this origin reflects a long relationship between people, river, and cacao. Every bag you hold represents a careful chain of intentional hands.

Producers choose this origin for its resilience in a remote environment and the distinctive, grounding character that High Amazon cacao develops through careful small-batch fermentation and drying.

Why this origin

The right cacao for your ritual

  • Flavor Rich and complex — bold berry notes, classic chocolate undertones, and delicate floral accents. Fuller and more layered than lighter desert-grown profiles.
  • Best for First-time cacao drinkers and daily ritual. The most approachable of our three origins — bold enough to feel special, balanced enough to be your everyday cup.
  • Energy Strong, steady theobromine-led lift that builds gradually and sustains focus and stamina — without the spike-and-crash of coffee.
  • Intensity Bold but not harsh. Rich and expansive. Adjust sweetness or spices to make it your own.

5,000 years of cacao — just miles from where we source.

Near our Amazon Basin origin lies Huaca Montegrande, an archaeological site where researchers discovered some of the oldest known traces of cacao use on Earth. Dating back over 5,000 years, this ceremonial center suggests the upper Amazon was one of cacao's earliest homes.

When you drink cacao from this region, you're tasting a lineage that stretches back thousands of years — from ancient sites to your cup. For us, this isn't just origin. It's continuity.

Honor and connection

Ethically sourced, directly traded

We work directly with the Awajún community — an indigenous community deep in the Peruvian Amazon, accessible only by river. Through hands-on training, equipment support, and premium pay well above New York commodity prices, we help them elevate quality while preserving traditional post-harvest methods.

There are no middlemen. Every purchase directly supports the families and forests that make this cacao possible — wild strains packed with nutrients, vibrant flavor, and unmistakable authenticity.

Common questions

High Amazon Basin — FAQ

Yes. Third-party lab testing confirms that Cacao Adventures’ ceremonial cacao contains up to 3 times the polyphenols of typical commercial cacao. Our recent lab results: 8.50% (Sacred Valley Ceremonial cacao), 8.96% (High Amazon Ceremonial cacao), 9.07% (Tropical Desert Ceremonial cacao), 9.58% (High Amazon Beans). Most commercial cocoa lands in the maximum 4% of polyphenols in published peer-reviewed analyses.

Deep and berry-forward with classic chocolate richness and delicate floral accents. Grown in humid, river-fed rainforest soils, it expresses complexity and depth — fuller and more layered than lighter desert-grown profiles.

Because it's pure, unsweetened cacao paste, the flavor is bold — but not harsh. Many describe it as rich and expansive rather than bitter. You can always adjust sweetness or spices to suit your preference.

High Amazon grows in humid rainforest terroir near the Marañón river, producing deeper chocolate tones, bold berry notes, and floral complexity. Tropical Desert from Piura is brighter and more citrus-forward — what some first-timers may read as sour is actually a natural expression of white cacao genetics. High Amazon is the most approachable of the two.

Sacred Valley uses the rare Chuncho variety from Cusco — warm, spiced, and earthy with cinnamon tones. High Amazon is bolder and fruitier. Both are exceptional; the choice comes down to flavor preference and ritual intention.

Yes. We work exclusively with native cacao genetics from the Amazon Basin — one of the most genetically diverse cacao regions on Earth. These are not high-yield commodity hybrids. Preservation of native strains is central to our mission.

For a daily ritual: 21 g (approximately 4 coins). For a deeper ceremonial experience: 35–45 g. If you're new to cacao, begin with a smaller amount and increase gradually.

Many people enjoy High Amazon cacao as part of their daily ritual. Start gently and listen to your body. If pregnant or managing a medical condition, consult a healthcare professional before use.

We do our best to get your cacao to your hands the best way possible but since we can't control the weather there is a chance it might melt. Cacao contains natural cacao butter and can soften in warm weather. If melting occurs, allow it to return to room temperature — quality and safety are not affected. During summer months we recommend adding warm weather protection at checkout.

This is direct-trade, small-batch cacao sourced from a remote Amazonian community accessible only by river. We pay a premium above New York commodity prices — without middlemen. You are paying for native genetics, direct relationships, independent testing, biodiversity preservation, and craft at origin. This is not commodity cocoa. Cacao powder is a whole different product, highly processed and is not as good for your body since it's a pressed product and the fat has been extract. Your body needs this fat to properly absorb cacao's beneficial compounds.

Near our origin lies Huaca Montegrande, where researchers found some of the oldest known traces of cacao use on Earth — over 5,000 years old. When you drink cacao from this region, you're experiencing one of cacao's most ancient and biodiverse homes. It's not just flavor. It's lineage.

The best cacao I’ve used!!

I start my morning meditations in my garden with a cup of Cacao Adventures cacao - currently I’m enjoying the Amazon High Basin, but they are all good, it is just very rich and complex and very reminiscent of a cup of cocoa by a campfire. I like their Joy recipe.

I have noticed that this brand of cacao (I’ve tried several) this is the absolute purest and best for flavor and bioavailability of cacao nutrients. I can get a bit gloomy at times and I have noticed that drinking my daily cup of Cacao Adventures cacao has given me better emotional stability, mental focus. My meditations also feel more
Grounded, heart warming and expansive.

The quality and purity of cacao makes a difference. I will definitely be a dedicated consumer of this high grade and delicious ancient heritage cacao. The quality of my day depends on it.

All-around best individual supply of cacao

I’ve tried many direct trade cacao blocks and this is the best at the best price. Packaging is also better than others, shipping is on time and reasonable, and the website gives comprehensive info and background on the origins and company ethos. The all around winner of individual cacao suppliers for me.

21 yo working on myself. I was called to this one. It’s spiritual and very active in dream realm

I saw only one left for Amazon PRIME through this seller a while ago and not overly expensive. I needed it for a group shamanic plant dieta so I chose this one, received it quickly, heated it and sipped away. That day and on~ it opened my heart ♥️ in ways I never imagined possible. I was able to work on different aspects of my life using this CACAO and I was reminded in every way possible that this world is very spiritual and you can achieve a lot if you really put your mind to it. I was able to change my overeating habits, put my walls down & be more open, work on myself efficiently, and quit using harmful substances ever since. The taste and smell was so pleasant, warm and comforting..I felt Mama Cacaos’ presence speak through me that I made a short but soul touching canción, dancing it out for Mama Cacao is so fun and a beautiful way to use the energy she provides you. The texture and unique feeling on my tongue and down my throat of this soothing Cacao is straight up unforgettable. This CACAO along with INTENTION was all I needed to get me started on my journey. Thank you CACAO ADVENTURES for this wonderful opportunity, I must say I always prayed and gave thanks before sipping this CACAO, for you and the communities that brought it to me, for making this experience possible. You guys are changing lives one cacao pod at a time♥️!!!

Delicious

These are very good, I’ll have to learn to work with them before I eat all of them.I post a picture of the nutritional list for those like me that want to know the sugar and carb count. I couldn’t find it in any pictures. The bag is only 8oz, not big but packed. I’ve never bought Cacao paste before so I’m not sure about the price compared to others. I’m looking forward to using it. I would recomend this product

Enjoyed!!

I purchased this Peruvian cacao because I was looking for a true ceremonial cacao.

Now that I have experienced it I find it to be mild in flavor and not bitter like others I have tried.

I enjoy the flavor and how easily it melts. I usually eat it just as it is and not in a liquid.

Overall I am very satisfied, and I will buy it again before I run out of it.

Very smooth lite taste, but

I tried this since I read that it has one of the lowest heavy metal counts. It taste really nice. The only thing I don't know is what the mineral amounts are of a serving. I am taking this to increase copper and magnesium but don't know how much it is giving me.

I cannot be critical of these discs as it's my first experience with ceremonial grade cacao, but I cannot say enough about my enjoyment of the drink these prepared. It was an incredible experience and the energy I felt after consuming it was unlike anything I'd felt in the past. I highly recommend trying it!

The ritual
